Empathetic AI is emerging as a significant resource for supporting mental health and well-being by understanding human emotions. Our Indo-Japanese collaborative research will develop an AI-based care system called “Omoikaruna AI”, which would identify early depressive risk signs using facial micro-expressions, tone, and voice features. It is highly significant research since there is a high mental health burden due to various reasons in both countries. The methodology involves collecting culturally rich video and audio data, annotating them for emotional cues, developing models to detect subtle depressive indicators, and integrating these models into a unified pipeline with a culturally sensitive alert interface. By combining India’s expertise in data collection and annotation with Japan’s advanced computational facilities, this collaboration will create an effective, real-time empathetic AI system. Deliverables of this proposal would be an AI-alert mediator system that would detect signs of depression with facial-micro expression, tone, and speech. This research would promote digital mental health care and bilateral research cooperation.
